Rethinking Tinnitus as a Stress Disorder: A Powerful Path to Relief

This past November, I had the wonderful opportunity to give a special presentation on tinnitus at the In Focus: Rethinking Tinnitus Symposium, hosted by Hearing Health and Technology Matters.

The symposium brought together leading voices in tinnitus care to explore the latest innovations shaping the future of treatment. It was attended by both patients and professionals alike, and it turned out to be an incredible event. I was honored to present alongside so many other passionate clinicians, researchers, and advocates.

My presentation, titled “Rethinking Tinnitus Support: Tinnitus as an Acute Stress Disorder,” offers a new perspective on tinnitus, one that frames it not just as an auditory condition, but as a PTSD-like stress disorder.

This reframing shifts the focus to the emotional and psychological impacts of tinnitus that prevent habituation, and empowers sufferers with hope, tools, resilience, and a better path to lasting relief.

I’ve been waiting nearly 8 months to share this presentation with all of you, and I’m excited for everyone to finally see it!

I worked extremely hard on this project, and I truly believe it’s one of the most powerful and important pieces of content I’ve ever created.

I hope it helps you feel understood, supported, and most of all, hopeful.

Topics covered in the presentation:

  • My personal journey with Meniere’s disease and tinnitus
  • The breakthrough that led to rapid habituation and lasting relief
  • Why I wrote Rewiring Tinnitus
  • How brainwave entrainment audio can support the healing process
  • The power of a holistic approach to tinnitus treatment
  • Why avoidance makes tinnitus worse, and how to break that cycle
  • The surprising connection between tinnitus and PTSD
  • Why so many tinnitus sufferers feel powerless
  • The traumatic emotional journey most patients endure
  • How treating tinnitus as an acute stress disorder improves outcomes
  • A deeply personal story of PTSD that shaped my perspective
