Today, I’m excited to share another inspiring success story and introduce you to Joanne, an experienced therapist who specializes in trauma, anxiety, and cognitive behavioral therapy.

Given her professional background, you might assume that she already had all the tools she needed to navigate tinnitus.

But when her symptoms became severe, Joanne found herself experiencing the same fear, hypervigilance, uncertainty, and emotional overwhelm that so many people with tinnitus face.

In this candid conversation, Joanne shares her journey from feeling consumed by tinnitus and sound sensitivity to reaching a place where she now barely notices it and no longer fears the occasional spike.

One of the things I appreciate most about Joanne’s story is that it highlights an important truth:

Understanding the concepts intellectually is not always the same as being able to apply them to yourself.

Even as a therapist, Joanne found that living through tinnitus was an entirely different experience than helping someone else navigate anxiety or trauma. Like many people, she discovered that recovery wasn’t about finding the perfect technique or eliminating every difficult emotion – it was about gradually helping her nervous system stop treating tinnitus as a threat.

Throughout our conversation, we also discuss how chronic stress, grief, and major life events repeatedly influenced her symptoms over the years. Each setback became an opportunity to strengthen her confidence, rather than erase the progress she had already made.

Today, Joanne says she has her life back.

Instead of constantly monitoring her tinnitus or worrying about what the future might hold, she has reached a point where the sound rarely captures her attention, and when it does, it simply isn’t a big deal anymore.

If you’re currently struggling, I hope Joanne’s story reminds you that recovery isn’t reserved for a lucky few. Even when tinnitus feels overwhelming, even when you’ve experienced setbacks, and even when you understand exactly what’s happening but still can’t seem to break free, meaningful change is still possible.
